The Prudes

[song I wrote on a rainy, boring Saturday night reminiscing of good old high school days three years out of college 1988]

                                ************************

"It's a Saturday night, it's raining outside and I'm sitting by the phone.

But it doesn't ring, is there something wrong? Another night all alone.

So I turn to the past, as I'd done before, when the rain had gotten me down.

And I flip through the pages of our glory days, a smile replaces that frown.

There I see myself, clad in T shirt and jeans, with the gang sittin’ ‘round the bird.

We were drinking some beers, and laughing through tears,

lonely wasn't a word.

The rain is falling and there's nobody calling

on this endless Saturday night.

But the good old days aren't so far away,

and there's better days in sight

We used to get in trouble, just stirring up fun, but no one seemed to mind. We were good ol’ boys, with our good ol’ girls, making fun of whatever we'd find. And together we learned, in some funny ways, the difference between right and wrong. But we always laughed, having somehow known, that our youth would someday be gone. As I turned the pages, I seemed to remember, when the days were sunny and warm. There was never a cloud, or so it seemed to, there was never a sign of a storm.

The rain is falling and there's nobody calling

on this endless Saturday night.

But the good old days aren't so far away,

and there's better days in sight.

Well I put on some coffee, ‘cause the rain’s still falling, and I've cuddled up to my past. What I’ve discovered is an ageless era that disappeared rather fast. The moments we shared, in our yesteryears, have all turned to nine-to-five. And the gang’s still sitting, but they're changing diapers, a new day in life has arrived. We're still drinking our beers, but a sip at a time, 'cause the mornings come so soon. Our careers and families, not to mention those wrinkles, have suddenly changed our tune.

The rain is falling and there's nobody calling

on this endless Saturday night.

But the good old days aren't so far away,

and there's better days in sight."
