Diana
[song I wrote the day after
Princess Diana died 1997]
I am a poor man from Scotland,
I sleep out on the street,
my last full meal was yesterday,
my next one comes in a week.
I have a friend in Africa,
he suffers from disease,
his children won't even come to him,
they're afraid of HIV.
Last night from across the miles,
we together looked into the sky,
and we sadly watched the brightest star,
go crashing into the night.
The sound was heard ‘cross the whole land,
and the world just took a deep breath,
time stood still for that moment,
that moment of her death.
Her words had touched so many,
her hands had fed the poor,
her heart embraced all the children,
all the children of the world.
Tonight when I say my prayers,
I will look into the sky,
and I'll say goodbye to the Princess,
who forever changed our lives.
And me? I'm still just a poor man,
but I say with a smile on my face,
I am richer today because of her,
Diana, Princess of grace.
