Harry Had It Right
{a song I wrote in 2017 feeling melancholy about the boys moving out}
He was a dad, made them laugh, loved his boys, they loved him back.
Those early years, he could do no wrong, an aging giant, who played them songs.
That's who they were, that's what they had.
He taught them manners, played lots of ball, taught them to get up, after they'd fall.
Those early years, they sought advice, his words were welcomed, at any price.
That’s who they were, that's what they had.
But Harry had it right with Cats in the Cradle, boys grow up, want to hit the town.
While dad stays home, no longer a giant, just pays the bills, hopes they come around.
That's how it goes, that's how it works,
Sons grow up, while dad grew down.
He's still a dad, wants them to grow, has more to give, than they'll ever know.
But they're on the town, with other plans, learning to fly, he understands.
That’s who they were, that's what they had.
So quiet now, still much to say, but his words can't win, it seems either way.
He needs to grow, from where he's been, he needs to learn, how do you fly again.
That's where he is, that's what he has.
But Harry had it right with Cats in the Cradle, boys grow up, want to hit the town.
While dad stays home, no longer a giant, just pays the bills, hopes they come around.
That's how it goes, that's how it works,
Sons grow up, while dad grew down.
That's where he is, that's what he has.
That's where they are, that's what they have.
That's how it goes….
