My Boys
[bedtime song I wrote inspired by our annual fun
at the Heartland Folk Festival 1997]
With each passing day, too much time slips away,
on this carousel ride we call life.
Little lands, little feet, bluest eyes, what a treat,
it's a boy, what a beautiful sight.
Butterflies, baseball bats, muddy sneaks chasing cats,
cookie dough on his nose, it's alright.
Chocolate smiles, sleepy eyes, belly laughs till he cries,
I’ve a wonderful feeling tonight.
Pony rides at the fair, smell of hay in the air,
sticky apples and peanuts galore.
Long bumpy rides, down that big wavy slide,
just a ticket or two at the door.
Skipping stones cross a pond, little trikes riding on,
cheesy popcorn and treats from the store.
His innocent eyes, and his curious mind,
never stop, never sleep ever more.
If I had my way, but for only one day,
I would bottle each smile, right or wrong.
'Cause this carousel fun, after all’s said and done,
is designed not to last for too long.
And if I had my way, but for only one day,
I would read to him all night long.
'Cause time’s passing by, on this carousel ride,
and the dusk much too soon turns to dawn.
Little hearts grow with dreams, or at least so it seems,
so let's fill them with rainbows and songs.
Took a moment today, and told him it's okay,
that this life is all his when I'm gone.
With each passing day, too much time slips away,
on this carousel ride we call life.
A date for the prom, pictures taken by Mom,
holding hands, what a beautiful sight.
No more crumbs on the floor, no fingerprints on the door,
empty bed in his room, it's alright.
Chocolate smiles, sleepy eyes, memories ‘til I cry,
I’ve a wonderful feeling tonight.
